Summary of position at 29 October 2020

Tyne Amateur Rowing Club is intending to run Rutherford Head on 28 November 2020, subject to on-going review of the situation regarding local and national Covid-19 related restrictions.  We are mindful that the situation may change at short notice and we are keeping in close touch with the local authorites.  It will run with the generous assistance of Newcastle University Boat Club and Tyne United Rowing Club.

It will run in two divisions and entry numbers will be limited to 60 boats in each. The event mix will be very much simplified compared to usual and will comprise only coxed and coxless quads and fours.

Entries will open at 6.00pm on Friday 6 November 2020 and close on 20 November 2020 (though may be suspended early). All entries will be taken on BROE for an hour or two on 6 November, so don't all pile in at 6.01pm! We will publish criteria for choosing who is to be offer an entry to in due course.

So that we are able to manage the event in a safe manner, and in accordance with British Rowing, local and prevailing government guidelines, we have had to set some criteria:

  • Entries will not be accepted from novice or very inexperienced crews that may require outside assistance or present increased risk in sometimes challenging conditions.
  • Crews must be able to manage their own boating activity.
  • Allocation to one of the 3 host clubs will be made once entries are closed so that numbers attending at each site can be managed.
  • For juniors, entries will be for J16 participants and above.
  • Participating clubs must have their own precautions in place for sharing of equipment but must also follow the location specific Covid-19 guidelines which will be published with the event instructions.
  • Doubling up of crew members over divisions will be permitted but entirely at the risk of the club and participants entering.
  • It is advised that anyone not doubling up should attend, race and then leave the event to reduce numbers attending.
  • If oversubscribed, priority will be given first to local based clubs and then considering entries from clubs that may have to travel some distance.
  • The course will run from Scotswood Bridge to a point approximately 200m downriver from the NUBC landing stage.
  • It is advised that clubs must not bring spectators to attend the event who are not otherwise helpers, competitors or trailer drivers.
We are sure that everyone will appreciate we have to take into account more than ever the impact on the local residents and environment.  We ask that all participants familiarise themselves with the instructions and guidelines that will be published in advance of the event, including car parking requirements for competitors.
