The club and Newburn bridge centre stage in an aerial taken in 2022; no rowing though
Introduction
Tyne Amateur Rowing Club is based on the River Tyne at Newburn, just west of Newcastle upon Tyne. It was founded in 1852 and is amongst the oldest sporting clubs in England. We have the longest and best stretch of river for rowing in the north of England.
We have active squads for men, women, masters, development level, novices and juniors. We have a good fleet of boats of all sizes and a modern £1m boathouse, with boat storage, large ergo room, a separate weights room and a large social area with kitchen and bar.
When we train
Squads train Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings from 5.30-8.30pm and on Saturdays and Sundays from 8.00am till about 1.00pm. Each squad has its own precise schedule of sessions.
If you are free during the day on weekdays, we run less formal Community Rowing sessions for adults. These are currently only on Wednesday mornings 9.30am-12 noon. Go to this page for details. You must let us know in advance you want to come down so we can plan ahead for you.
Learn to row
We are pleased to welcome new members. If you have some experience on the water, you may be able to start right now. For complete beginners we run learn to row courses for both adults and juniors in the summer, with taster sessions preceding them over the winter. Our 2024 courses are either over or are about to start but are full. Get in touch now about 2025 courses via the respective web page.
Get in touch
Please contact us if you would like to discuss anything or come down for a chat. Use our Contact us page to send queries either to Tom Jackson, Club Captain, about the rowing side of things or Jo Gregory, Club Manager, about other matters including social events and room hire. Leave your email address and/or telephone number and one or other will get back to you straightaway. If expressing an interest in a learn to row course, please use the forms on either the adult or junior L2R page.
