Junior Rowing at Tyne ARC
Rowing is a fantastic sport for young people – it builds fitness, confidence, teamwork and lifelong friendships. At Tyne Amateur Rowing Club, we offer an exciting and supportive pathway for juniors aged 11–18 who want to learn to row and become part of a thriving squad.
Our Summer Learn to Row programme is a fun and engaging way to get started during the holidays, with plenty of time on the water and expert coaching. We are now taking expressions of interest for the 2026 Summer Camp, with dates to be confirmed. If you’d like to be added to the mailing list, please get in touch.
Year-Round Introductory Programme (2025–26)
If your child is keen to join sooner, our year-round introductory programme offers a brilliant first step into the sport. For £50, juniors can enjoy two months of rowing with two coached sessions per week. The programme is generally land-based at the beginning, focusing on key rowing skills before going on the water. This is a great way to learn the sport safely and confidently, teaching good posture, correct stroke sequencing and developing aerobic fitness.
Once key competencies are achieved, juniors can progress to rowing on the Tyne. To row on the water, juniors must be able to swim at least 50 metres in light clothing, as is standard for the sport. This programme can start at any time outside of June, when our junior squads are preparing for the National Championships. Before signing up, every junior can attend a free session to see how much they enjoy it.
Rowed Before?
For experienced juniors, Tyne Amateur Rowing Club is a great place to develop further. Depending on experience, rowers may be able to join one of our training squads straight away and progress towards competitions alongside a friendly and committed group. Please see our Junior Squad page for more information and then contact us to discuss the next steps.
Safeguarding and Coaching
All junior sessions are led by qualified, experienced coaches, and all adults working with juniors are DBS checked in line with national safeguarding standards. Safety and wellbeing always come first, and new rowers are supported at every stage.
What to Bring
For land sessions, juniors should wear sports clothing and trainers. For water sessions, close-fitting sportswear is best to avoid catching on the rowing equipment. Bring a water bottle and, in colder months, layers and a waterproof top are recommended.
