Swim test and capsize drill 20 October 2018

The swim test and capsize drill is this coming Saturday, 20 October at West Denton Leisure Centre, which is in the west of the city – full address and directions and bus info below. There will be a charge of £2 on the day for club rowers - Uni rowers' payment to be collected separately.

What we do

You will swim four lengths of a 33m pool, two front, two back stroke. You will tread water for 30 seconds and duck under for a few seconds. If you are not a strong swimmer, this does not rule out rowing, but your club needs to know and will discuss with you.

You will then do a capsize drill one-by-one in the pool using single sculling boats. This teaches you what to do if you turn over -  essentially get out of water as soon as possible! Good fun but obviously with a serious side. Please wear normal swimming costume with shorts or leggings and a t-shirt on top.

Timing

You should be at the pool no longer than an hour, but it does depend how many arrive and when. Can we ask that all TURC and all TARC (junior and adult) rowers arrive at the pool at 4.40pm, go and change and be ready poolside at 5.00pm when we get access to the pool. Northumbria Uni rowers should arrive by about 5.15pm, get changed and be poolside at about 5.30pm (you may have to wait a little bit and watch the first wave finish). We have to be off the water at 6.30pm.

Directions

Please note that Google Maps has the location of West Denton Leisure Centre slightly wrong – it is immediately west of the big Morrisons, not further north in the school site. Park in front in the car park just off West Denton Way not at the school. But you do turn in at the set of lights by the tower block, not at Morrisons. As per Google.

If coming by public transport from town, catch the 62/63 bus at John Dobson Street near Northumbria University or on Blackett Street at old Eldon Square and get off at the West Denton Way Shops stop opposite the big Morrisons supermarket. I attach a timetable with three possible buses for students highlighted in yellow (Saturday times are the same as Friday ones except in early morning). Takes about half an hour.
