Tyne LDS - Saturday 4 October 2025
This year's event on 4 Oct 25
The LDS (Long Distance Sculling) series is organised by the Northern Regional Rowing Council and consists of six competitions on consecutive Saturdays in September, October and November. Tyne ARC hosts the LDS competition on the Tyne in the morning and this year it is on 4 October..
The LDS series web page at https://www.nerowing.com/lds2025.html will have the series poster uploaded soon (i.e. in late August) and full details of the Tyne and other rounds will be there too as they approach.
A separate SBH is run by Tyne United RC in the afternoon of the same day - see https://tyneunited.co.uk/turc-small-boats-head for information on that.
Tyne LDS 2024 ran despite wind and waves
On 12 October 24 the weather and water conditions were not wonderful, but the morning LDS ran as planned on the complete 4500m course. The SBH competition in the afternoon was shortened to fiinish below Newburn Bridge, though of course conditions eased just as it started! The page for the LDS series in 2024 is here - www.nerowing.com/lds2024.html.

A bright morning for the Tyne LDS on 19 October 2019 - landing after the race
Tyne LDS 2023 - cancelled !
The LDS in on 7 October 23 was the first competiton we were to run in the winter season. There were 164 entries for the LDS, more than usual by a long way - 99 singles, 28 doubles and 37 quads. However, as race day dawned (literally) it became evident that an overnight rise in water height and flow, bringing with it lots of debris including trees, made racing unsafe.
As a result both the LDS based at TARC and the SBH based at TURC were cancelled, with lots (and lots) of disappointed rowers waiting to boat! Details of the start orders and other documents are still at www.nerowing.com/lds2023.html if you are interested in what might have been.
Tyne LDS 2022 - it ran despite dire wind forecasts a few days before
Go to the official LDS series page at www.nerowing.com/lds2022.html for the results of all the LDS events that ran in 2022, including that on the Tyne on 15 October. The competition and its 'sister' the Tyne United Small Boats Head the same day ran and in not too challenging conditions despite 24mph wind forecasts a week before. The course for each was shortened at the finish, though, as it was still a bit windy and there was a low tide. This would have made the normal arrangements with boats crossing the racing line and using the inside arches of Newburn bridge on return to the steps too risky.
Tyne LDS 2021 - it ran
Results are at www.nerowing.com/lds2021.html.
Tyne LDS 2020 - cancelled by NRC due to Covid
With regret, on 28 September 20, the Northern Rowing Council announced that it felt unable to continue with the two remaining Long Distance Sculling series competitions still planned at that time (all others had been cancelled already). There were to have been a combined LDS/SBH at Tyne on 10 October 20 and and LDS at South Hylton on 24 October 20. But it was decided to cancel the remaing two as well.
Tyne LDS 2019 - pre-Covid
See www.nerowing.com/lds2019.html for more details of the 2019 LDS series including results for the Tyne LDS. The 2019 Tyne LDS event saw a record number of 137 starters. All went well on a reasonably bright and calm morning. Fastest boat (by 37 seconds) and winner of the Open 4x- event was a home crew TYN-Bain in a time of 17:18.1 rowing against the tide.
